ABSTRACT

Background: It is not known how Histology residents accept the inclusion of a videoconferencing system on the microscopic structure of the human body in their self-learning strategy. Objective: To explore to depth the experience of Histology residents at the Sancti Spíritus University of Medical Sciences who used a videoconferencing system for their professional training. Methodology: Qualitative study with in-depth interview was conducted with Histology specialists and residents who have used the videoconferencing system at the Sancti Spíritus University of Medical Sciences. The interviews were transcribed, coded and the main topics addressed were selected. Results: 5 users of the videoconferencing system were interviewed; 5 themes emerged from the interview: 1) How residents insert videoconferences into their self-learning strategy, 2) Preference for videoconferences over textbooks, 3) Successes and failures of videoconferences, 4) What do videoconferences contribute to the training of the resident, advantages and disadvantages?, 5) Suggestions to improve videoconferences. Conclusions: A videoconferencing system on the microscopic structure of the human body can play a leading role in the learning strategy of Histology residents. The preference shown by residents for videoconferencing over other teaching media may be associated with the ability of multimedia to reduce cognitive load and facilitate learning when Mayer's principles are followed to developing these media. The presence of digital images in these videoconferences was essential to their acceptance.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The COVID?19 pandemic has brought medical and surgical training to a standstill across the medical sub?specialties. Closure of outpatient services and postponement of elective surgical procedures have dried up opportunities for training vitreoretinal trainees across the country. This “loss” has adversely impacted trainees’ morale and mental health, leading to feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. Therefore, there is an urgent need to redraw the surgical training program. We aimed to describe a systematic stepwise approach to vitreoretinal surgical training. Methods: We introduced a three?pronged approach to vitreoretinal surgical training comprising learn from home, wet lab and simulator training, and hands?on transfer of surgical skills in the operating room in our institute. Results: Encouraging results were obtained as evaluated by feedback from the trainees about the usefulness of this three?pronged approach in developing surgical skills and building their confidence. Conclusion: The disruption caused by the COVID?19 global pandemic should be used as an opportunity to evolve and reformulate surgical training programs to produce competent vitreoretinal surgeons of the future.

ABSTRACT

Hands-on resident surgical training for various ocular procedures is essential to impart good surgical skills to the budding ophthalmologists. Here in this report, we demonstrate a simple and inexpensive technique of performing extraocular muscle surgery on goats' eye. These animal eyes possess soft tissue resemblance to that of human eyes to a greater extent in terms of scleral rigidity, muscle elasticity, its width, thickness, and its insertion onto the sclera. Therefore, rectus muscle recession, resection, and plication surgeries can be performed repeatedly to improve an individual's orientation and practical experience before performing the procedure on human eyes.

ABSTRACT

Surgical skill enhancement for the residents under training can be performed through various efforts. Here in this report, the authors describe a technique of corneoscleral perforation repair on goat's eye, as the tissue resemblance and the reality of experience while performing crucial steps are similar to human eyes. Beginning from tissue handling, optimal suture placement was taught with an intention to impart quality techniques of traumatic globe injury repair. Therefore, rather than training on expensive artificial eye model, training budding surgeons on goat's eye gives much more realistic tissue handling experiences in the presence of constant challenges almost similar to human eyes.

ABSTRACT

Many clinical teachers who train general practice residents are specialists from other departments and are not fully familiar with the work of general practitioners.By socio-culturally adapting concepts from the Preceptor Education Project (PEP) developed over the past 25 years in the United States, this paper provides seven principles general practice residents can consider during rotations in other specialties.(1) Having clear learning objectives makes teaching and studying easier;(2) Teaching takes time,(3) Ask to be observed;(4) Teaching physicians should evaluate you;(5) Patients may resent meeting with a medical resident;(6) Make allies and treat them well;(7) Teach others. These principles can guide general practice residents to take responsibility for excellent training.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE@#In medical colleges, resident training programs must provide adequate surgical experiences, making them qualified at the end of residency program. It is generally believed that it would take more time for a surgical resident to perform surgical procedures than a board-certified surgeon. There is no current benchmark with regards to operative time and surgical cases involving orthopedic surgery residents. In this study, we focused on two key aspects of surgical training variables, namely, surgical duration & C-arm shoots when the procedure is done by a faculty surgeon in comparison to done by an orthopedic resident under supervision of faculty surgeon.@*METHODS@#It is an observational prospective study, we observed patients undergoing 1 of 5 common orthopedic trauma operations in a community teaching hospital. We recorded two variables, 'skin to skin' surgical duration & number of image intensifier television/C-arm shoots of faculty surgeons and orthopedic resident (postgraduate-3yr) under supervision of faculty surgeon. We calculated mean difference of two variables with or without resident & determined statistical significance, we also compared functional outcome at final follow-up.@*RESULTS@#The total number of procedure observed was 402. On observing summarized results of all surgical procedures, faculty surgeons took on an average 33 min lesser (p  0.05) in functional outcome of cases performed by faulty surgeon and resident.@*CONCLUSION@#Little data has been previously published regarding the impact of teaching orthopedic resident in operating room. We demonstrate that resident participation increases the procedure time for commonly performed orthopedic procedures and also the number of C-arm shoots, hence there is a need for technical training facilities outside the operating room such as in cadaveric labs, saw bone labs & virtual surgery simulation. Also the preoperative plan should be thoroughly discussed by faculty surgeon with residents.

ABSTRACT

The standardized resident training is an important step for training high-level professionals in clinical medicine and it is an important part of medical education after graduation. The training of residents' clinical thinking and clinical judgement should be emphasized in all resident training programs. Some resident programs in China still focus on the teaching of important knowledge that are originated from the medical colleges. Therefore,it is urgent for faculty to adopt new teaching methods aiming at the training of clinical thinking and clinical judgement. The paper introduces a mode for teaching clinical thinking and clinical judgement in the resident training programs. The goal is to improve the level of resident physicians in clinical diagnosis and treatment in China.

ABSTRACT

The standard training of emergency residents is still in its early phase. Computer-based simulation teaching overcomes the drawbacks of traditional teaching mode, because of its high reducibility, simple operation , repeatability , low risks and feasibility for standardized assessment , which is the development trend of emergency medicine teaching. But at present, there are many deficiencies in the application and research of simulation teaching, including low popularity, low level of application, neglect of Teachers' training , research lagged behind , etc . In the future , these aspects should be continuously improved , including popularizing the understanding of computer simulation teaching and attaching importance to teachers' training and research work, so that simulation teaching procedures could meet the needs of modern medical development and practical clinical work.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the cognition and attitude of check-up system in Standardized Residents Training Program in Chongqing, so as to provide further suggestions to improve teachers' qualifi-cation and examination management system. Methods From September 2016 to December, a questionnaire survey was conducted among 265 teachers and 59 teachers in Chongqing, which includes basic information of teachers and their cognition, satisfaction and suggestion of residents training examination management system. SPSS 21.0 was used to describe the survey results and the Spearman rank correlation analysis was conducted. Results 265 valid questionnaires were recovered, and the effective recovery rate was 100%. The survey showed that the teachers' cognition of resident training examination management system is good. Only 21 people (8%) completely had no knowledge of the management system of resident related assessment. A total of 90.6% of the clinical mentors considered that a check-up system of clinical mentors on training should be implemented strictly during the period of clinical mentors on training. Only 167 (63%) of the hos-pitals had developed detailed assessment system for resident physicians. Conclusion Most of the teachers in Chongqing have a higher awareness of living and training management system, and it is universally recog-nized for strict process assessment. However, in terms of the standardized training examination system for residency, it needs improvement. It is suggested that the examination system should be perfected, the ex-amination management be strengthened, and the teachers' team be standardized.

ABSTRACT

Due to the insufficient education of medical ethics and tending to medical moral educa-tion, the residents lack the ability to make ethical decisions. Therefore, we applied Four Topics method in the clinical ethics training of residents. The clinical ethics training was divided into three stages, and each stage had different training content and objectives. Dongyang People's Hospital adopted the form of lectures and panel discussions. During the group discussion, the group leader was in charge of case preparation, which came from clinical practice, and then all members applied the Four Topics method to analyze and discuss the ethical conflicts, and make the ethical decision. Through this process, residents' ability to solve ethical problems in clinical practice was enhanced.
